Professional Work Visa
(H1-B)

Almost everyone has heard about the H-1B visa. The H-1B visa allows you to enter the U.S. in order to work for six years. Most people have not heard about the other requirements: (1) you must have at least a bachelor’s degree from a college or university; (2) you must have a job offer in the U.S. for a position which needs someone with a bachelor’s degree; and (3) the employer must be willing to pay a minimum salary which is different according to job and location. If you receive an H-1B visa, your husband or wife and children under 21 will receive H-4 visas allowing them to remain with you in the U.S. until your own H-1B comes to an end. The nice thing about H-1B visas is that you get to stay here long enough to get your green card through a process called Labor Certification.

Sample US Visa

Example Number One:
Maria, recently married, just graduated from university with a degree in computer science. Her best friend’s uncle has a software development company in New Orleans, Louisiana. The uncle offers Maria a job as a computer software developer. The INS approves the job offer after reviewing the appropriate documentation. Maria is then able to go to the embassy to get an H-1 visa. Her husband goes with her to the embassy and gets to come on an H-4 visa.

Example Number Two:
David graduated from university several years ago with a degree in accounting. His sister has a friend with a business in Los Angeles, California. The business is willing to hire David as an accountant or maybe even as business management. The INS approves the job offers after a review of the appropriate documentation. David goes with his wife and two children to the embassy. David gets an H-1 visa, his wife and children get H-4 visas.
